Humanists Victoria has launched the Human Rights and Social Justice Grants to help create a civil society in which people can lead an ethical and fulfilling life, relying co-operatively on reason, ingenuity, creativity, and compassion, free from discrimination or supernatural beliefs.
In pursuit of this vision, Humanists Victoria supports initiatives in Victoria that are working to promote and/or protect the human rights and civil liberties of individuals and groups, especially those experiencing discrimination.
Focus Areas
Funding is available to initiatives that promote and/or protect human rights and civil liberties, including but not limited to those that focus on:
- protecting marginalised groups from violence, discrimination and/or other human rights abuses
- promoting social justice, inclusion and/or civic opportunities for marginalised groups
- opposing religious privilege
- the abolition of discriminatory laws
Priorities
- They prioritise initiatives that:
- innovate
- present an evidence-based solution to an aligned and legitimate issue
- have the capacity to achieve the outcome/s sought
- work across the focus areas
- embody Humanists Victoria’s Policy Principles generally, and in relation to ethics, liberty, tolerance, education, bio-ethics and the environment
- have an interest in developing a co-operative association with Humanists Victoria
- These are priorities only, and projects that possess some or all the above attributes are eligible to apply.
Funding Information
- Initial one-off grants of between $5,000 and $20,000 are available and amounts will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
- The total funding pool this round is $40,000. Once grants are fully expended, recipients will be required to submit an acquittal report.
Use of Funds
- Funding can be used for:
- Advocacy (including policy development, lobbying, litigation, community organising)
- Capacity building
- Program development
- Research and dissemination
- Funding cannot be used for:
- Ongoing program or service delivery
- General fundraising appeals
- Projects or organisations that are partisan in nature
- Retrospective activities
- Non-charitable activities
Geography
- Funding is available to Victorian-based initiatives of any scale that seek to have a positive impact on the Victorian community. Activities and impacts do not need to be limited to Victoria.
Target Populations
Marginalised groups and those experiencing discrimination, including but not limited to:
- Women and girls
- Refugees and people seeking asylum
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
- Non-religious people
- LGBTIQ+ communities
Eligibility Criteria
Recipient organisations must be:
- Based in Victoria
- Not-for-profit, incorporated or unincorporated entities
