The Government of Canada has announced a Grants Program, to Increase the Capacity of Indigenous Women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ Organizations to address GBV. The objective of this call for proposals is to increase the capacity of Indigenous not-for-profit organizations with experience working on GBV issues. Funded projects will increase their ability to prevent or address GBV against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.
Key Action Areas
Projects will increase the capacity of organizations and networks to prevent violence. They could improve:
- The management capacity of organizations that address violence, such as how boards govern and plan
- The skills needed to prevent violence, such as the ability of an organization to deliver a program
- How to work with other organizations to prevent violence
- How long strong programs can last by securing funding from many sources
- How an organization uses evidence of community needs to build sound programs
- How an organization adapts programs to make them accessible to the community it serves
- Access to funding, including how to fill applications for funding
- How the sector shares resources and skills to provide better programs to prevent violence
Types of Projects & Funding Information
- Stream 1: Projects submitted by Incorporated or registered Indigenous not-for-profit organizations with experience working on Gender-based violence (GBV )issues for Indigenous women, girls or 2SLGBTQQIA+ people
- For these projects, the maximum amounts (total per project) are:
- Up to $400,000 in total for local organizations. Their activities cover at least one community, such as a town, city, or regional municipality. The Department will focus on these organizations.
- Up to $500,000 in total for regional or provincial/territorial or interprovincial/interterritorial organizations. Their activities cover parts of a province or territory, an entire province or territory, or a few adjacent provinces or territories. For this call, organizations that cover one of Canada’s three largest municipalities would qualify as regional: Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.
- Up to $750,000 in total for national organizations. Their activities have the potential of impact across Canada.
- For these projects, the maximum amounts (total per project) are:
- Stream 2: Projects submitted by informal Indigenous groups with a GBV prevention mandate or experience in addressing GBV issues for Indigenous women, girls, or 2SLGBTQQIA+ people that are not yet incorporated or registered.
- This is an opportunity for these informal groups to apply for up to $25,000 in total. The condition for this funding is that they become incorporated or registered. After, organizations will be able to carry out other activities to increase their capacity, within the limit of $25,000.
Eligibility Criteria
For this call for proposals, an Indigenous organization is one that represents First Nations, Inuit, and/or Métis Peoples and is controlled by members of the population it serves.
- A not-for-profit organization is a society, or association organized and operated solely for social welfare, civic improvement or recreation, or any other purpose except profit.
- This funding stream is not eligible for the extra 25% for northern or remote areas.
- Organizations can only apply once for this call for proposals.
