Deadline: 31 March 2019
Indela (Initiative for digital rights in Latin America) funds and supports organizations that work to advance digital rights in Latin America. In a world where the border between physical and digital worlds is increasingly blurred, digital rights have become crucial to fully exercise citizenship and agency in society.
Under the strategic direction of Fundación Avina , Luminate and Open Society Foundations , and supported by the Ford Foundation and the International Development Research Center (IDRC) , Indela is an initiative that will fund, train and support organizations that promote digital rights in America.
As the use of the Internet permeates all our activities, the challenges they face increase: disinformation in social networks; the deployment of invasive technologies for official surveillance; the indiscriminate collection of personal data by private platforms; the ‘hacking’, and attacks on information systems and infrastructure.
This is especially important in Latin America, where institutional fragilities are also reflected in the use of the internet and the adoption of technologies. In many of the countries of the region, the past of authoritarian regimes is still alive; others are today under mandates where freedom of expression and the right to protest is unknown; and in some more – often shielded in narratives of national security and fight against crime – regressive proposals for regressive advances in topics such as defamation, privacy or copyright.
They support organizations to transform the region
- To finance: Smart capital coordination, for a flexible and customized financing of organizations.
- Connect: A solid ecosystem is built through a platform of dialogue and active collaboration.
- Train: It is not just about financing: building a close link allows us to guide organizations in the development of their capacities.
