Applications are now open for its Kaupapa Māori Legacy Event Fund to support recurring events that celebrate Māoritanga (Māori culture) in Tauranga Moana.
The fund is committed to supporting recurring events that:
- celebrate Sea Port natives
- promote and share Māori culture
- raise awareness of events of historical and/or cultural significance to Tauranga Moana.
Funding Information
- The maximum grant is $15,000 +GST, however, the majority of grants are $10,000 +GST per event.
The events they fund must
- be driven by, or partnered with iwi and/or hapū in the Tauranga City Council boundaries
- be run by a not-for-profit organisation
- have been operating for at least one year in Tauranga Moana before the application is submitted
- deliver tangible community and citizen benefits
- strongly align with our event funding values (our funding decisions are heavily weighted towards these principles)
- must include a written endorsement in support of and outlining involvement in the event from the current chairperson or senior executive (i.e., chief executive, general manager) of the iwi, hapū or marae.
They don’t fund events that
- are designed to be ‘one-off’ in nature
- don’t champion our event funding values or priorities
- are run by individuals. We will only grant funding to a legal entity/organisation.
- are commercial ventures seeking significant profit
- take place prior to an event funding decision being made
- are primarily political, protests or for the purpose of religious persuasion
- are primarily for the purpose of fundraising or may transfer funding to another party
- are private functions, meetings, conventions etc. Private is defined as any event where the general public aren’t able to attend or purchase tickets
- are markets, expos, stand-alone installations or exhibitions, or for repayment of debt
- are for research, feasibility or evaluation of events outside of the event itself
- support business as usual operations, general salaries, rents or other overhead costs except as a proportion of the total event costs
- support repairs/maintenance and capex projects outside of an event
- request more than 50 percent of the event’s total event expenses
- have outstanding debt with Tauranga City Council
- are already funded through another Tauranga City Council event fund
- have breached previous funding agreements with Tauranga City Council, including post-event reporting requirements and where no commitment has been made to rectify this
- occur outside of Tauranga City boundaries with the exception of TECT All Terrain Park and McLaren Falls and applications. to the Tauranga Western Bay Community Event Fund.
Criteria
- you must submit a high-level event budget
- events that have free or low-cost admission to the public are more likely to receive funding support
- events that are predominantly commercial in nature are less likely to receive support
- events and/or organisations that already receive substantial ongoing support from Tauranga City Council, financial or otherwise, are less likely to receive support from the Kaupapa Māori Legacy Event Fund.
