Applications are now open for the National Health Fund’s EduCare Grant Programme that provides assistance to aspiring healthcare professionals who are facing financial challenges in completing their course of study.
The National Health Fund (NHF) is an agency of the Ministry of Health and was established in 2003 by the National Health Fund Act. The NHF provides financial support to the national healthcare system in order to improve its effectiveness and the affordability of healthcare for the Jamaican population.
What they do?
- Help Jamaican residents to access medication in both the public and private health sectors through the provision of the NHF Card and the Jamaica Drug for the Elderly Programme (JADEP) Card and the administration of the Government of Jamaica Health Card.
- Delivery of in-patient and outpatient pharmacy services for the public health sector. This includes the management of the medical warehouse and of over 118 pharmacy locations in the public health system, providing full time and scheduled services.
- Provide grants to institutions to improve health care delivery including infrastructure development, training, disaster preparedness, medical equipment and transportation. Project management is an important part of the work which extends to not only internal projects but major projects for the parent Ministry.
- Support multiple health-promotion programmes to aid in the prevention, reduction and management of non-communicable and communicable diseases.The NHF is ISO 9001:2015 certified and is therefore focused on continuous improvement of the processes to ensure customer satisfaction for both internal and external customers. Good corporate governance and the management of risk are also hallmarks of the operations.
Eligibility Criteria
- The applicant must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Jamaican National
- Be currently enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited programmed of an accredited university
- Must have completed the second year of study and attained and maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA
- Be able to prove financial need
- An official transcript from your institution must be submitted
- At least two (2) reference letters regarding the applicant’s character from notable persons in the applicant’s community (teacher, pastor, employer, etc.). i) Where possible, evidence of voluntary/community service, extra-curricular activities (awards, letters acknowledging participation, etc.)
- Note: Applying to the grant programme does not result in an automatic acceptance, nor is it a guarantee that the grant will cover the entire cost of a degree programme. Students are therefore encouraged to actively seek alternative.
- Note: If a student is offered and accepts a National Health Fund Educare Grant, disbursement of the grant will be dependent on that student completing the bonding requirements of the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service (MoFPS). The NHF reserves the right to withdraw the grant if the bonding agreement is not finalised by May 31, 2024.
