The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) seeks applications to promote national collaboration, education, and translation to strengthen capacity building for occupational safety and health (OSH) surveillance and associated activities.
The recipient funded under this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) will use research and/or non-research approaches to enhance collaboration among federal, state, tribal, local, and territorial jurisdictions currently funded by NIOSH to implement OSH programs, and facilitate the participation in OSH surveillance programs and associated activities by jurisdictions not currently supported under NIOSH state surveillance grants.
The funded recipient is expected to:
- Lead national level coordination and collaboration of OSH surveillance and communications in partnership with federal state, tribal, local, and territorial agencies.
- Support the development and growth of state, tribal, local, territorial, and non-governmental (NGO) partnerships to use and promote surveillance research to practice.

Lead national level coordination and collaboration of OSH surveillance and communications in coordination with federal state, tribal, local, and territorial agencies. Examples include the development, feasibility testing, operation, and evaluation of a tool or resource to support national OSH surveillance collaboration, education and translation, such as:
- A free and open-access online collaboration space containing OSH surveillance data and resources, and that facilitates ease of access for federal, state, tribal, local, territorial, academic, and non-governmental partners; and
- Webinars, workshops, meetings, e-newsletters, web page content, and educational materials.
- Support the development and growth of state, tribal, local, territorial, and non-governmental (NGO) partnerships to use and promote surveillance research to practice. Examples include program support for advancement of tribal and state planning and priorities; assistance or guidance for coordinated, targeted efforts to protect workers; monitoring the impact of work on health inequities; monitoring statistical and other trends and progress over time; conducting pilot evaluation activities to assess how well partnerships and shared resources impact the prevalence of industry- and occupation-related illnesses, injuries, or fatalities; conducting educational and outreach activities; and developing targeted intervention and policy recommendations.
Strategic and Intermediate Goals
The NIOSH FY2019-2024 Strategic Plan identifies strategic and intermediate goals for its research portfolio. The strategic goals listed below address the major health and safety issues facing the U.S workforce and are the broad focus areas for this NOFO:
- Reduce occupational cancer, cardiovascular disease, adverse reproductive outcomes, and other chronic diseases.
- Reduce occupational hearing loss.
- Reduce occupational immune, infectious, and dermal disease.
- Reduce occupational musculoskeletal disorders.
- Reduce occupational respiratory disease.
- Improve workplace safety to reduce traumatic injuries.
- Promote safe and healthy work design and well-being.
Funding Information
- Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards: CDC/NIOSH intends to commit up to $275,000 in FY 2023 to fund up to one award, pending the availability of funding. Awards issued under this NOFO are contingent upon the availability of funds and a sufficient number of meritorious applications. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the number, quality, duration and cost of the applications received.
- Budget and Project Period: The maximum award amount will be $275,000 for the first 12-month budget period, including direct and indirect costs. The maximum total project funding amount for one award is $1,375,000 over a five (5) year project period, with a maximum of $275,000 per year, including direct and indirect costs. The project period for an award made under this NOFO is expected to run from 7/01/2023 to 6/30/2028.
