The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom is seeking nominations for Raif Badawi Award 2019 to recognize journalists or organizations from countries that are predominantly Muslim, and focuses on human rights violations.
The Foundation is continuing its worldwide commitment to independent journalism, and once again this year nominations are open for the Raif Badawi Award for Courageous Journalists at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
Together with the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels they would like to direct the public’s attention to the threatened situation of media workers in many of the Islamic societies.
The prize, co-initiated by Badawi’s wife Ensaf Haidar and Tagesschau speaker Constantin Schreiber, recalls the case of Raif Badawi.
Elements
The nominations should contain the following elements:
- Justification: Please state on one page at most why their proposed person or organization should receive the prize, what the quality and relevance of their journalistic work is, and how it campaigns for independent and professional journalism.
- Short CV of the nominated person or short description of the organization
- Links to relevant articles / publications (in the original language)
Jury
An independent jury of high profile media representatives will select this year’s award winner:
- Ensaf Haider, wife of Raif Badawi and president of Raif badawi Foundation
- Florian Harms, editor-in-chief t-online
- Astrid Frefel, longtime Middle East correspondent ; freelance correspondent for Swiss and Austrian media
- David Schraven, managing director and founder of the research network Correctiv
- Andrea Backhaus, responsible editor for the Arab world at ZEIT.Online
- Andreas Cichowicz, editor-in-chief NDR
