The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now accepting applications to achieve and maintain the elimination of perinatal HIV transmission in the United States and to optimize the health and wellbeing of people with HIV, their infants, and all persons with perinatally acquired HIV.
The purpose is to maintain very low numbers of new US perinatal HIV cases, reduce congenital syphilis, and optimize the health of women with HIV or syphilis, their infants and persons with perinatally acquired HIV. This project will establish a national resource center to implement CDC’s Elimination of Perinatal HIV Framework, convene a task force of public health and clinical experts to develop innovative public health and best clinical practices, and develop large educational and best-practice-sharing networks of perinatal HIV and congenital syphilis prevention and treatment professionals.
The recipient will collaborate with CDC over a 5 year period of performance to establish a National Resource Center for the implementation of CDC’s Framework for the Elimination of Perinatal HIV in the United States and will convene a Task Force of subject matter experts from public health, clinical care and persons living with HIV to develop innovative approaches to optimize perinatal, maternal/parental and infant health for persons affected by HIV.

Outcomes
- As outlined in the logic model, the following are the outcomes the recipient is expected to achieve during the period of performance:
- Increased awareness of clinical and public health professionals regarding strategies to achieve and maintain elimination of perinatal HIV and the prevention of congenital syphilis in the United States, including approaches to prevent HIV among reproductive-age people and optimize pre-pregnancy health for people with HIV;
- Increased the availability of technical assistance and capacity building to improve perinatal HIV and congenital syphilis care and prevention systems. Utilize aspects of The Framework for the prevention of congenital syphilis, and if additional funds become available, for the prevention of other perinatal infections and emerging perinatal health threats;
- Increased use of culturally appropriate perinatal HIV and congenital syphilis prevention resources to support health equity and reduce health disparities by race and ethnicity;
- Increased awareness and expertise among the HIV and STI prevention and treatment workforce regarding perinatal HIV and congenital syphilis prevention and strategies to optimize wellbeing of women with HIV, persons with perinatally acquired HIV, and women with syphilis;
- Increased expertise among public health and clinicians to implement strategies to eliminate perinatal HIV and congenital syphilis;
- Increased clinical and public health professionals implementing strategies to eliminate perinatal HIV, prevent congenital syphilis and provide specialized and holistic health services to persons with perinatally acquired HIV;
- Reduced annual perinatal HIV diagnoses in the United States to achieve perinatal HIV elimination goals Attain and maintain low numbers of new annual perinatal HIV diagnoses in the United States, consistent with perinatal HIV elimination goals (<1perinatal HIV diagnosis per 100,000 live births and a perinatal HIV transmission rate C 1%).
