Deadline: 1 April 2019
Paul Hamlyn Foundation is seeking applications for its grant program entitled ‘Act for Change Fund: young people leading social action’ which is a £3.6 million partnership for organisations supporting young people working for change.
The Fund provides resources for young people to challenge social injustice, find ways of overcoming inequality and give voice to issues they are experiencing.
A joint initiative between Paul Hamlyn Foundation (PHF) and Esmée Fairbairn Foundation (EFF) in partnership with the National Lottery Community Fund, both foundations are acting as match funders and are awarding grants on behalf of the #iwill Fund.
Act for Change Fund promotes the potential of young people with experience of disadvantage to devise and develop activities and programmes to shape the world around them. It aims to create a more diverse group of social, cultural and political leaders for the future.
FUNDING PRIORITIES
- They want to fund young people with experience of inequality or injustice to lead social action activities in the UK to create change.
- Many young people want to see change in their communities and the world around them. The Fund encourages applications that seek to make change. Change-making activities could involve, but are not limited to: campaigning, advocacy, direct action, mobilisation, lobbying for change, engagement, coalition building, legal challenges or movement building.
Funding Information
Act for Change Fund will make grants of between £20,000 and £100,000 over two years. They strongly encourage organisations to consider their own size, capacity and experience in relation to the amount requested. Larger grants will be considered on an exceptional basis.
What to include in applicant’s application
In applicant’s application, the foundation needs they to demonstrate:
- How they reach and support young people (aged 14-25) with lived experience of inequality or injustice to challenge the root causes of disadvantage, and create change;
- How young people lead change or are poised to lead change, with the support of your organisation, with young people in decision-making positions at all or many levels;
- How this funding will help their organisation improve their impact, reach or sustainability in relation to youth-led social action for change.
What won’t they fund?
In addition to PHF’s general exclusions, they will not fund:
- Work that takes place primarily in schools, although they know organisations may reach out to young people initially through schools
- Volunteering programmes, there are other opportunities for voluntary groups to find support through the #iwill Fund
- Work that focuses exclusively on youth voice, self-expression or awareness raising without a vehicle for change; they want to fund work that provides opportunities for young people’s experiences to lead to change through action, such as campaigning, mobilisation, lobbying, advocacy or movement building
Eligibility Criteria
Act for Change Fund will support work taking place in the UK only and cannot fund work outside of England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. They understand that social change can be pursued at a local, regional, national or global level but the activities they fund which contribute to this change must take place in the UK.
What size organisation can apply?
They can fund organisations with an annual income ranging from £25,000 to £5 million. Act for Change Fund aims to make a mix of small and larger grants with this funding ranging from £20,000 to £100,000, strengthening and expanding the field of organisations doing this work. They recognise that organisations in this space are diverse in size and kind. However, they are unlikely to fund large campaigning organisations that have no prior track record of youth-led action for change.
