The Slovak Challenge Fund (SCF) is now open for applications to facilitate transfer of Slovak know-how and innovative solutions that address development challenges in Moldova and North Macedonia.
SCF aims to identify solutions that deliver improvement and value, especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products; support solutions that assure viability in local conditions, long-term sustainability, and potential for scale-up, and promote solutions to share knowledge and tackle development challenges in other countries
The Partnership Project is financed by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic and implemented by the UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub.
The eligible applicants can be only Slovak private sector entities. The applicants are required to engage local partners (depends on country where the project will be implemented) to assure viability in local conditions, and to promote sustainability and scalability of the solutions.
Objectives
- The objective of the Slovak Challenge Fund (SCF) is to facilitate the transfer of Slovak know-how and innovative solutions that address development challenges identified by UNDP Country Offices and contribute to the SDGs’ achievements.
- The SCF seeks innovative solutions that generate improvement and value, especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products.
- The SCF accepts solutions that are free to use and/or are based on open-data sources.
- The proposed solutions need to be sustainable and have a potential for scale-up and replication. The proposed solutions should also empower those who are left behind (or at risk of being left behind). Gender sensitivity shall be an integral part of the implemented projects.
Focus Areas
- The SCF is looking for innovations in the following areas:
- Natural Resources: Supporting the sustainable use of natural resources through improved water or waste management and/or increased energy efficiency and clean energy utilization.
- Agriculture: Increasing the productivity, partnerships, access to markets and competitiveness of organic agriculture actors like farmers and producers.
- Good Governance: Introducing and/or improving e-governance and open data use in public sector management and delivery.
- Resilient Society: Supporting the resilience of the societies as a reflection on the Covid 19 pandemic, the crisis in Ukraine, including the energy crisis.
Funding Information
- Successful applicants will get:
- Prize funding ranging between US$20,000 and US$40,000
- Possibility to access the UNDP global presence (+170 countries) and networks to help support the selected solutions to scale-up and replicate to new countries.
- Possibility to get reference letters for other public procurements and tenders (after successful Project execution and completion)
- Duration: The Project have to be completed within 12 months from the signature of the agreement or within the period defined in the agreement.
Outcomes
- Recognizing that innovation comes in many forms, SCF welcomes various types of innovations, including products, services, programming approaches, operational changes, financial, market or technology-driven innovations. Both programmatic and operational ideas are welcome. SCF accepts solutions that are free to use and/or are based on open-data sources. Please also note that the presented innovations may be in different stage of its development.
- The SCF views innovations in its broadest sense including:
- New approach, product, idea, or service that has not yet been tested anywhere;
- Innovative approach, product, idea, or service that is new to the beneficiary country and/or to the specific sector in the beneficiary country;
- Service or business model being introduced to a target group for which it has not yet been tested.
Eligibility Criteria
- Entities applying for the SCF need to meet the following eligibility criteria:
- The Applicant have to be a private sector entity registered in the Slovak Republic.
- The Project have to be implemented in North Macedonia or the Republic of Moldova.
- The Applicants are required to engage local partner(s) to assure viability in local conditions and to promote sustainability and scalability of the solution.
- The Applicant may partner with other Slovak Entity/Entities (eligible for the SCF support. The Applicant is responsible for the Project and has to guarantee that the permission of the other members has been obtained.
- All Applicants have to demonstrate their capacity to implement The submitted Project, and need to demonstrate adequate financial, material, human and other non-financial resources to implement the submitted Project within the set timeframe.
- The Project has to demonstrate that the activities funded by the SCF are complementary to the Applicant’s existing activities and that the Project would not progress without SCF funding, i.e. would not take place at the same scale or would not have the same development impact without the SCF contribution.
- The submitted Project has to have a potential for financial, social, and environmental sustainability and have to be scalable.
- All Projects have to be inclusive in nature, benefit the target beneficiaries, and contribute to the achievement of SDGs and not just benefiting participating entities.
- The Applicant has to be able to provide co-financing of at least 20% of the total cost of the Project. Co-financing above the minimum threshold is preferred and will be taken into account during the evaluation.
- Support of the initiatives promoting the use and production of tobacco, alcohol, drugs, firearms and other dangerous substances and tools is not allowed.
