The National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC) is pleased to announce the Annual Project Funding Call for applications for the 2023-2024 Financial Year.
They hereby invite individual arts practitioners and registered arts organisations and community arts centres to apply for funding.
The invitation is open to active art practitioners in the disciplines of craft, dance, literature, multidiscipline, music, theatre and visual arts to submit their applications for project funding. Applications presenting content in South African indigenous art forms are encouraged to apply.
Focus Areas
Applications for funding for each of the above-mentioned disciplines must have the capability to address at least two (2) of the Five (5) critical focus areas below:
- Social Cohesion and National Building: This is the extent to which the project brings communities together as well as allows for the inclusion of previously excluded parts of the society while at the same time creating national unity
- Marginalised and Indigenous Arts: Projects to be considered must focus on uplifting rural communities as they have a wealth of indigenous and rare artistic expressions that remain in the shadow of mainstream arts.
- Addressing Social Ills: Projects that provide a platform for artistic expression to the voiceless as well as help with alleviating social ills such as xenophobia, gender-based violence and other violent crimes, drug abuse and gangsterism will be highly considered.
- Supporting Vulnerable Groups: Projects that provide employment opportunities for women, people living with disabilities and in rural areas will be highly considered.
- New Works and Digital Arts: Projects that are innovative and introduce new arts through digital artistic presentations as well as other platforms will be highly considered.
Funding Information
- The maximum amount applied for should not be more than R500 000. The maximum threshold for only Musical Theatre productions is R800 000. The allocation will be in line with the redress and transformation imperatives of the NAC.
Types of projects to be considered (included but not limited to):
- Productions, concerts, showcases, performances, craft and art exhibitions, publishing, and book fairs in:
- Dance performances/productions, Exhibitions, Festivals including literary festivals or book fairs (these will be considered only if they have a community participation component)
- Music concerts
- Musical theatre productions
- Publishing subsidies for book publishing houses
- Puppetry showcase
- Running costs will be supported in association with the relevant artistic programme costs (not to exceed 15% the of budget)
- Self-publishing by established/prolific authors
- Storytelling
- Theatre productions
Eligibility Criteria
- Individuals Organisations/Institutions
- Individual applications are for a single applicant (an individual) who is undertaking a project,
- In cases where several people are working collaboratively on a project, one member of the group should take the lead in applying,
- All applicants must be South African citizens and over 18 years of age,
- Projects may be implemented in South Africa, across the continent or abroad,
- Individuals are requested to propose projects that are aimed at stimulating the broad arts and culture sector,
- Applications from formally registered South African arts and culture organisations /groups and institutions are acceptable,
- All lead applicants must be South African citizens and over 18 years of age,
- Projects may be implemented in South Africa, across the continent or abroad.
- Applicants needs to consider that some countries may still be experiencing Covid restrictions and thus travel may be affected,
- Registered arts organisations are requested to propose projects that are aimed at stimulating the broad arts and culture sector,
- A lead applicant working for a government department and/or entity will not be accepted,
- A lead applicant working under the Government Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) and Internships/Learnerships will be eligible to apply.
Ineligible
Categories of projects and/or items that are not funded.
- Architecture
- Beauty pageants
- Church choirs
- General magazines
- Novice writers applying for publishing.
- Infrastructure costs
- Interior design
- Music arrangement of other person’s work without permission
- Personal commissions and commissions by other institutions
- Purchasing of books
- Purchasing of equipment
- Purchasing of musical instruments
- Purchasing of Stage Equipment
- Running costs not associated with the project being applied for
- Seed funding
- Vanity press/publishing
- Videos and film
- Writing in other subjects that are not of a creative writing genre
