The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is excited to announce its Small Grants Program for small nonprofit organizations.
Funding Information
- Organizations with a current budget size up to $40,000 can apply for grants up to $5,000 plus an opportunity for capacity building.
- Organizations with a current budget size of $40,000 or more can apply for grants up to $15,000.
- Grants of up to $15,000 are offered to small nonprofit organizations for work in Greater New Haven.
Eligible Projects
- The following requests will be considered:
- Project Support – A grant for a new or existing specific project.
- Capacity Building Support – A grant for short-term financial assistance to build the infrastructure of an organization for long term success. Requests for capacity building include but are not limited to: board development; strategic planning; evaluation; and capital expenditures including equipment, building renovations or relocation.
- General Operating Support (GOS) – A grant made to further the general mission and work of an organization, rather than for a specific purpose or project. General Operating Support gives nonprofits flexibility to direct their spending where it is needed most and allows greater focus on achieving an organization’s mission.
Ineligible Projects
- Unless otherwise noted by a specific grant program, these projects do not receive consideration:
- Activities that include the practice or promulgation of any faith or ideology
- Endowment campaigns
- Previously incurred expenses
- Funding deficits
- Sports groups/leagues that do not provide academic and/or other social supports
- Organizations that have a fiscal sponsor that is outside the TCF region and do not have a local Advisory Board or Board of Directors
- LLCs with a nonprofit fiscal sponsor
- Nonprofits closely affiliated with a for-profit business that offers similar programs and/or shares leadership
- PTSOs, PTOs, PTAs, Sport/Club booster clubs of PK-12 academic programs
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) or any applicable statute of the Internal Revenue code or have a fiscal agent with the appropriate tax status.
- Applicants must be serving people within the Community Foundation’s twenty-town region.
- Applicants must have an operating budget of $2M or less.
- Regional and statewide organizations cannot apply for General Operating Support.
- An organization cannot apply if it has a current Responsive grant that ends later than December 31, 2025.
- Applicants who received a grant from The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven in the previous three years must be up to date with all reporting requirements.
- Small grants can be received only once in a period of two calendar years.
- Organizations can apply for either a Small Grant OR a Responsive Grant – not both.
- You must comply with all applicable local, state, and federal anti-discrimination laws on the basis of:
- Age
- Sex
- Religion
- National origin
- Sexual preference
- This pertains to all aspects of organizational operations including hiring, leadership and service provision.
