The U.S. Embassy in Cairo and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State are pleased to announce the 2021 call for proposals for the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) Grants Program.
Since its inception in 2001, AFCP has helped preserve archaeological sites, historic buildings and monuments, museum collections, and forms of traditional cultural expression in Egypt and around the world.
Funding Information
- Pending availability of funds, awards will range from $10,000 to $500,000 per project.
Program Activities
Appropriate project activities may include:
- Anastylosis (reassembling a site from its original parts);
- Conservation (addressing damage or deterioration to an object or site);
- Consolidation (connecting or reconnecting elements of an object or site);
- Documentation (recording in analogue or digital format the condition and salient features of an object, site, or tradition);
- Inventory (listing of objects, sites, or traditions by location, feature, age, or other unifying characteristic or state);
- Preventive Conservation (addressing conditions that threaten or damage a site, object, collection, or tradition);
- Restoration (replacing missing elements to recreate the original appearance of an object or site, usually appropriate only with fine arts, decorative arts, and historic buildings);
- Stabilization (reducing the physical disturbance of an object or site).
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligible project applicants are reputable and accountable non-commercial entities that are registered and active in SAM.gov and able to demonstrate that they have the requisite experience and capacity to manage projects to preserve cultural heritage.
- This may include non-governmental organizations, museums, government ministries, U.S. institutes of higher education, or similar institutions and organizations, including U.S.-based organizations subject to Section 501(c)(3) of the tax code.
- Past AFCP award recipients may submit applications for continuation funds under this opportunity.
- In order to be eligible to receive an award, all entities must have a unique entity identifier (Data Universal Numbering System/DUNS number from Dun & Bradstreet), as well as a valid registration on www.SAM.gov.
- Each concept note submitted must include the following:
- Project basics, including a working title, anticipated project length (in months), location/site, and project cost estimate (amount requested from AFCP; in U.S. dollars);
- Project implementer information, including the name of the organization, name and title of the project director, and SAM registration status;
- Project purpose that summarizes the objectives, proposed activities, and desired results;
- The rationale for AFCP support, explaining why it is in the interests of the U.S. government to fund the project, how the project relates to U.S. Embassy goals and/or existing bilateral agreements, and how it futures U.S. foreign policy objectives.
