The U.S. Embassy Jakarta’s Public Affairs Section has announced an open competition for past and current participants of U.S. government-sponsored exchange programs to submit applications to carry out public service projects using the skills and knowledge they gained during their exchange experiences.

Eligibility Criteria
- Eligible applicants are individuals, or teams of individuals, who are past and current participants of U.S. government-sponsored exchange programswho work as journalists or work directly within the field of journalism.
- Applicants must be Indonesian nationals.
- Applicants must have a commitment to non-discrimination practices, including equal treatment without regard to race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and political affiliation.
- Commercial firms are ineligible to receive funding through this mechanism.
Project Requirments
- Proposed projects must support capacity-building programsfor Indonesians with a focus on journalism.
- Proposed projects should focus on one of the following themes:
- Press freedom.
- Data driven journalism.
- Facts-based journalism / countering disinformation.
- Investigative journalism (including promoting transparency and accountability in government).
- Environmental journalism.
- Women’s empowerment through media.
- Promoting pluralism and tolerance (messaging/communications/media).
- Advocacy through the media for indigenous, minority, and underserved communities.
- Proposed projects must take place in Indonesia.Applicants are encouraged to propose projects taking place in the Sumatra, West Java, Kalimantan, and Papua areas. Priority may be given to projects organized in these regions.
- Preparation for all projects must begin before September 30, 2019. However, this does not mean that projects must be completed before September 30, 2019.
- To allow the Embassy time to review proposals, the start date of proposed projects must be at least 8 weeks after the proposal is submitted. The actual date, however, may be adjusted, depending on the agreement between the Embassy and applicants.
- Projects that are not typically funded include:
- Paying to complete activities that began with other funds.
- Citizen exchange programs with foreign countries that do not have an American angle.
- Projects that include international travel.
- Political party activities or projects inherently political in nature.
- Projects that support specific religious activities.
- Social welfare projects.

- Applicants may submit more than one proposal.
- Proposals must be written in English and submitted electronically to the U.S. Embassy Jakarta via email at the address given on the website.
