Applications are open for the Small Grants Programme (SGP) of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) that is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
SGP grant-making in over 125 countries promotes community-based innovation, capacity development, and empowerment through sustainable development projects of communities local civil society organizations with special consideration for indigenous peoples, women, and youth.
The goal of the chemicals focal area in GEF-6 (2015-2018) is to promote the sound management of chemicals throughout their life-cycle in ways that lead to the minimization of significant adverse effects on human health and the global environment. In GEF-6, SGP aims to support community-level initiatives and actions to prevent, reduce and phase out POPs chemicals and manage contaminated sites in an environmentally sound manner and mitigation of environmental contamination.
Eligibility Criteria
- This call for proposal is only open to trusted non-profit entities eligible to receive UNOPS funding under UNOPS rules and procedures.
- Eligible entities should have proven long-term mandate and interests on working with poor and vulnerable local institutions and communities, and should have high reputation working on the prevention, reduction and elimination of harmful chemicals and sustainable waste management. The qualifying entity should have proven capacity and record of good practices in chemicals and waste management.
- The proposing organization should have strong global, national and local linkages and connections with key stakeholders in chemicals and waste management, including governments, international organizations, civil society organizations, private sector, academia and research institutes and other stakeholders.
- The proposing organization should have global, regional and national presence or connections to build up strong coalitions to campaign for chemicals and waste management, advocate for communities and civil-society organizations’ roles in chemicals and waste management.
- A management and service provision cost will be paid based on the identified tasks and deliverables and this will not be more than 25% of the overall costs. Entities are expected to have a demonstrated management capacity backed up by relevant technical staff and financial management skills as well as show value for money for the proposed actions and ensure this is reflected in the requested fees.
- The modality of delivery of the services will be expected to be two pronged. The entity may implement projects on the ground by themselves and or, concurrently, be able to build capacity of national entities by assisting local organizations. This however, will have to be rationalized based on the costs of delivery as compared to the overall investment of SGP.
