ViiV Healthcare is seeking applications for its ‘Positive Actions for MSM & Transgender People’ small grants programme with an aim to improve sexual health & wellbeing and advance social and economic justice for men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender people in resource-limited and hostile settings.
The flagship programme of Positive Action for MSM & Transgender People, committing a minimum of £1.25million each year to community-based initiatives focused either on men who have sex with men or transgender people.
- Focus is resource-limited settings/developing countries and those countries which are particularly hostile to MSM and transgender people.
- The program support projects that address HIV, sexual health and sexual wellbeing in combination with one other topic (mentioned below).
- In some instances, the program also supports applications that focus on just one of the topics below. For example, an organisation may apply to work on economic empowerment but only if:
- they already address HIV and sexual health comprehensively, and;
- their proposed project focuses only on people at risk of or living with HIV.
- The program encourages all applicants to ensure that safety & security, activities to strengthen and develop their organisation & reasonable core costs are adequately addressed in their proposed budget.
Grant Information
Grants of up to GBP £40,000 for two-year projects are available (with no more than £24,000 in any one year).

Positive Action for MSM & Transgender People is central to ViiV Healthcare’s commitment to communities affected by HIV and AIDS.
Each year, it supports and build new partnerships with community-based organisations (CBOs) around the world in settings that are either resource-limited or hostile to the LGBT community.
The small grants programme is the flagship component of Positive Action for MSM & Transgender People; our other activities are focused on supporting the efforts of CBOs to improve sexual health & wellbeing and advance social & economic justice for MSM and transgender people.
These activities include:
- The Strategic Grants which inform, strengthen and complement the work of CBOs by focusing on: (i) Evidence Generation; (ii) Capacity Building, and; (iii) Promoting an Inclusive Social & Economic Environment, supporting interventions that are either of a larger scale than our small grants or addressing alternative topics.
- Our Support Grants which support CBOs during periods of acute hostility to the LGBT community
Other grant making initiatives
- A diverse range of non-financial initiatives including:
- Novel conference activities
- Skills-building workshops
- Forums to engage with other CBOs
- Support for nascent LGBT-led organisations in particularly hostile environments
- The Associates programme (a dedicated programme of grant managers with a diverse skill set related to HIV from across ViiV Healthcare)
