The Uraia Trust is a national organization that supports democratic transformation processes in Kenya. Its mission is “To provide quality civic education and empower Kenyans to exercise their civic duty in order to realize their constitutional aspirations.”
Uraia’s work is informed by its four Key Focus Areas (KFAs), which are:
- Entrenching constitutionalism,
- Promoting free and fair elections,
- Addressing the historical political marginalisation of women, youth, persons with disabilities and minority communities in Kenya,
- Internal excellence.
With funding from Global Affairs Canada, CARE International, Uraia Trust, The Centre for Rights Education (CREAW), Community Advocacy and Awareness (CRAWN) Trust, and Urgent Action Fund Africa (UAF Africa) are implementing the Women’s Voice and Leadership (WVL) Project whose goal is to strengthen the institutional capacities and activities of county, regional and national women’s rights organizations seeking to empower women and girls advance the protection of women’s and girls’ rights and achieve gender equality.
As part of the Women’s Voice and Leadership Program, Uraia wishes to work with organisations that subscribe to its values, which are, integrity, professionalism, teamwork, equality, equity and non-partisanship in order to achieve gender equality in Kenya.
WVL Programme is a five-year project aimed at strengthening the institutional capacities of county/regional/national women led WROs seeking to empower women and girls to realize their rights and achieve gender equality. To achieve this, the programme will provide funding to local/regional/national women led WROs in recognition of the funding gaps they face.
The WVL Project aims to achieve the following outcomes:
- Improved management and sustainability of local women’s rights organizations.
- Enhanced performance of women’ rights organization’s programming and advocacy to advance gender equality and empower women and girls.
- Increased effectiveness of national and sub-national women’s rights platforms, networks and alliances to affect policy, legal and social change.
Funding Information
The maximum size of grant an Organization can apply for in each category is Kenya Shillings Three Million (kshs 3,000,000) and the maximum project duration is 2 years initially (with a possibility to extend / increase their grant later).
Eligible Activities
This call is for WRO Applicants who wish to apply for an initial two-year grant (with possibility to increase/extend later). The funds can cover costs such as:
- Core/general support to the organisation,
- Capacity building for staff/volunteers/members,
- Organizational development support,
- Gender responsive or transformative approaches to raise community awareness on gender equality, equity, inclusiveness.
- Activities that promote socio/economic and political rights of women and girls,
- Strengthening advocacy efforts towards realization of women and girls’ rights,
- Engaging men and boys to become champions of women and girls’ rights,
- Participation in networks, for example those that promote gender equality and address barriers to women’s participation
Ineligible Activities
Ineligible activities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Activities concerned only or mainly with individual sponsorship for participation in international workshops/conferences.
- Activities concerned only or mainly with individual scholarships for studies or training courses.
- Activities supporting political parties.
- Activities supporting conflict.
- Activities supporting debts and debt service charges.
- Activities that support terrorism or terrorist related activities.
- Cash donations.
- Credit or loan schemes.
Eligibility Criteria
WROs that wish to apply for grants under this call must meet the following criteria:
- Must be WROs that are women led – meaning a Director / head who is female
- Must have a core focus on promoting the socio-economic and political rights of women and girls.
- Must be non-government, non-political and not-for-profit (non-commercial) entity.
- Must be a locally registered organization registered with relevant authority at county or national level and operating in Kenya.
- Must have existed for at least one year since the date of registration.
- Must have an active board of directors, governors or advisors and at least half of the board members must be female.
- Must have at least 2/3 of staff, volunteers, or members who are women or girls.
- Must be an organisation that targets women and girls as the main beneficiaries.
- Must be an organization that can demonstrate, through its activities and actions, a belief in the full realization of women’s and girls’ empowerment.
- Must be available and willing to participate in WVL capacity development initiatives, which will be funded by the project.
- Must be willing and able to set up a bank account if they don’t already have one, to receive funds from the project if successful.

Interested organizations are invited to submit concept notes based on the templates provided ( Attachment 1 – Concept Note Template, and Attachment 2 – Budget Template) . The completed concept notes and budgets should be submitted by email at the address given on the website.
