The Youth Travel Foundation is seeking applications for its grant programs to support the personal and professional development of young adults through travel.
Each year, it awards grants to applicants who submit a travel project that is original, doable and that embodies their values. Since its inauguration in 1993, the Youth Travel Foundation has enabled more than 600 young people to carry out their goals and embark on a new adventure.
Types of Grant
- Solo Travel: Solo Travel grant is intented for young travellers who wish to volunteer, acquire new skills or develop their professional career in an environment outside of their country of residence.
- Group Travel: Group Travel will be awarded to a group planning an oversea trip that will provide the participants with a deeper understanding of intercultural differences and allow them to embark on a journey contributing to their personal development.
- Mary Barclay: Mary Barclay is the founder of the Canadian Youth Hostel Association, now known as HI Canada. In 1933, she set up the first Canadian hostel in a tent west of Calgary (Bragg Creek). In 1987, at the age of 86, Mary received the Order of Canada, the highest honor in the country. This grant is dedicated to the role she played in building a hostelling movement in Canada.
- Sleep for Peace: As part of the United Nations International Day of Peace, observed every year on September 21st, Hostelling International (HI) launched the Sleep for Peace initiative. As part of this awareness program, national HI associations around the world launch activities promoting the role played by travelling in contributing to world peace and cultural understanding.

Eligibility Criteria
- Solo Travel: The candidate must
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and reside in Canada
- Be between 18 and 35 years old on the departure date
- Pursue a travel-related project with personal and professional development goals, unrelated to an academic program or activity
- Group Travel:
- The members of the group must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents and reside in Canada
- The travellers must be less than 35 years old (except chaperon) and if the group consist of underaged participants, they must be accompanied by an adult for the whole duration of the trip
- Pursue a travel-related project with a purpose other than tourism (focused on leisure or entertainment) or formal academic activities and internships
- Mary Barclay:
- The candidate must be between 18 and 24 year old on the departure date
- The candidate must prove that they can finance 80% of their trip, to which the foundation can add up to $1,000
- The trip must be for a duration of at least three weeks
- The candidate must organize the entire trip
- The trip must include at least two destinations
- The trip must involve a learning and educational component of other cultures
- The candidate must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and live in Canada
- Sleep For Peace:
- The video must explore the theme ”travel conscious” and last up to one minute
- The participant, Canadian or permanent resident, must be between 18 and 35 years old at the time of submitting the video
- The participant must have all the rights to the video
- The winning video will be selected by an internal jury
