Nominations open for Japan International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers

Nominations are now open for the Japan International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers to increase motivation among young researchers who are contributing to research and development in agriculture, forestry, fisheries and related industries in developing regions and show outstanding performance and research achievements that may lead to future innovation.
Areas of Research
- The award covers research areas in agriculture, forestry, fisheries and related industries in developing regions, including the food industry sector and the field of environment.
Prize Information
- The award winners will be invited to Japan to receive their awards personally and present their research results and achievements and will also receive a cash prize of US$5,000 each from JIRCAS.
Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates should be researchers who have the nationality of a developing country and/or territory, are under 40 years old as of January 01, 2025, belong to a non-Japanese research institute or a non-Japanese university, are engaged in research and development in agriculture, forestry, fisheries and related industries in developing regions, and fall under any of the following criteria:
- Those who have shown outstanding performance in research and development in agriculture, forestry, fisheries, or related industries for a developing region, and who show great promise.
- Those who have shown outstanding achievements in research and development that will lead to future technological innovation in agriculture, forestry, fisheries or related industries for a developing region, and who show great promise.
Selection Criteria
- The Selection Committee will give consideration to the following perspectives in evaluating and judging the applicants’ performance and research achievements for this award:
- The research and development has shown abundant originality.
- Achievements in the research and development have been objectively evaluated, e.g., by being published in academic or technical journals.
- The research and development has shown consideration for the development of agriculture, forestry, fisheries or related industries in developing countries in terms of dissemination and commercialization.
- The research and development has shown potential for great development and for leading to future technological and methodological innovations, even when it might not be fully completed or not diffused enough at the present time.
Application Requirements
- Only one researcher can be recommended from each institute, including its branches.
- If a research institute recommends two candidates or more, the Secretariat will ask the institute to choose one. If the research institute does not respond by the due date, all applications from that institute will be excluded.
- The application must include supporting materials that substantiate the candidate’s achievements, such as the applicant’s most important research papers (three items), technical handbooks, patent applications or utility models, newspaper articles etc., and the entire publication list directly related to the applicant’s research.
- Applications that are insufficient or incorrect will be excluded from the evaluation.

Apply for NEF Research Grant Program

The Nagao Natural Environment Foundation is seeking applications for its Research Grant Program to support academic and scientific research aimed at understanding nature, ecosystems, and biodiversity and contributing to conservation actions based on scientific data in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
The programme is designed to enhance the research capability of young researchers in that region, and applicants are limited to individual researchers who prepare proposals, not to groups or organisations. They expect their applicants to take this opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge and enrich their experience through their research work.
Funding Information
- The maximum grant size in this programme is one million (1,000,000) Japanese yen per project, with a maximum duration of two years.
Role and Responsibilities
- If granted, recipients should:
- conduct the approved research project following ethical standards as a responsible scientist;
- submit a detailed progress report, with photographs taken and a financial report, within one year after implementation of the approved research project; and
- submit a detailed final report, with photographs taken and a financial report, upon completion of the approved research project.
Eligible Projects
- A proposed research project must:
- be scientific research contributing to the nature conservation of the country where the applicant currently works or studies;
- focus primarily on living organisms;
- be carried out in the country where the applicant currently works or studies;
- involve fieldwork for data collection;
- be the applicant’s own research work (team project is ineligible);
- achieve its objective(s) and submit interim and/or final reports within a scheduled project period of not less than one year and not more than two years; and
- be exclusively funded by the NEF Research Grant Programme.

Eligibility Criteria
- An applicant must:
- be a national of developing country in the Asia-Pacific region;
- be either of the following:
- a researcher with at least three years of research experience and sufficient achievement in their field of study, working full-time at a research institution or relevant organisation in one of the countries listed, or
- a full-time doctoral student enrolled at a research institution in one of the countries listed;
- have research experience and skills sufficient to conduct and manage the proposed research project;
- be able to communicate in English;
- not have another application to the NEF;
- not have another ongoing NEF-funded project at the time of application submission; and
- not have had another NEF-funded project for the past two years.
Evaluation Criteria
- The NEF Secretariat will check applications to ensure all the requirements are fulfilled. Only qualified applications will be examined by the NEF Selection Committee based on the following criteria:
- relevance and importance to nature conservation;
- clearness of objectives and research questions/hypotheses;
- originality and quality of the proposed research;
- appropriateness and concreteness of methodology to achieve objectives and answer research questions/hypotheses;
- feasibility of the research design and schedule.

Japan Foundation Small Grant Program

The Japan Foundation is seeking applications for its grant program to cover partial expenses to implement projects concerning Japan, in the field of Arts & Culture and Japanese Studies.
International cultural exchange to promote deeper understanding of Japan including projects to enhance Japanese studies in Thailand.
Priorities
- Promotion of deeper understanding of Japanese arts and culture among the people of Thailand and this region
- Joint-research and conferences whose results will be published
- Projects that would further promote and expand the horizon of Japanese studies in the field of humanities or social sciences
- Lower priority will be given to the projects based on existing partnerships, such as agreements between universities and sister institution relationships
- Potential for development into new projects
- Innovative approaches or pioneering elements in the themes and contents
Funding Information
- The Japan Foundation, Bangkok’s contribution will not exceed 50,000 Baht.
Qualifying Projects
- Projects concerning Japan (Arts and Culture/Japanese Studies) International art and cultural exchange events implemented in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos such as art exhibitions, performing arts or film screenings to promote deeper understanding of Japanese arts and culture among the people in Thailand and this region. This category also includes projects to enhance Japanese studies in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos such as joint-research, conferences, seminars and intensive courses.
Ineligible Projects
- The following projects are not eligible:
- Projects dealing solely with topics in the field of natural science
- Commercial activities, missionary activities, political activities and election campaigns
- Activities in support of specific doctrines or claims
- Capital fund and endowment drives, debt reduction, donations, public relations campaigns, advertising, creation or support of awards or grants
- Purchase of land
- Design, construction or maintenance of buildings or monuments
- Projects that focus on developing weapons and military technology
- Procurement of equipment
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants should be non-profit organizations (e.g. universities, research institutes and academic associations, NGO/NPOs) located in Thailand, Cambodia or Laos.
- In principle, the project should be carried out in the country where the Applicant is based.
- Applicants should carry out the project as an institution and should cover a part of the cost.
- The project should be implemented and completed within a Japanese fiscal year (from April 1 to March 31 the following year).
- Applicants must have a bank account capable of accepting grants from the Japan Foundation, Bangkok. A bank account may also be opened before remittance. In case the bank account is the account of individual, certified letter will have to be submitted to state the relationship between applicant organization and individual.
Non-eligibility
- Applications from individuals or for-profit organizations are not accepted.
- In principle, organizations that have continually received support from the same program for the past three fiscal years are not eligible to submit applications for the fourth fiscal year. This is a measure to avoid giving ongoing support to the same applicants and to distribute grants to as many applicants as possible.

Japan Foundation Fellowship for Arts and Culture in Asia (Visual Arts)

Applicants are now invited to submit applications for the Japan Foundation Fellowship to develop human resources in the field of visual arts to those who cultivate and nurture transnational collaborating/co-creating projects in Japan, ASEAN countries, and Timor-Leste.

- Applicants outside Japan must include Japan as one of the countries (except for applicants who hold nationality or permanent residency of Japan).
- Activities/Projects that take place where the applicant holds nationality, citizenship, or permanent residency, or where the applicant currently resides or where s/he is based in (hereinafter Country of Residence) are not eligible for the fellowship.
- The travel must be continuous; you cannot go back to a country you have already traveled to during the Fellowship Period.
- Projects that, in relation to art-related fields, aim to conduct research, study, and/or creative activities, to build network platforms, and so on.
- The projects should necessitate an applying candidate of the filed, who is based in Japan, member countries of ASEAN, or Timor-Leste, to stay for a certain period of time in countries other than where they are based.

The Japan Foundation is pleased to announce its Indo-Pacific Partnership Research Fellowship Program with the purpose of building partnerships and intellectual networks in the Indo-Pacific region.
This program is designed to promote international research and collaborative activities on common policy issues that require cooperation and engagement within and beyond the Indo-Pacific region, with the purpose of contributing to the maintenance and strengthening of a free and open international order in the Indo-Pacific region, bringing about peace and prosperity to the entire region.
The program aims to encourage a new generation of researchers, experts, and practitioners who share the same concerns to build a new platform for intellectual cooperation, and to support the formulation of new policy proposals, visions, and initiatives from the Indo-Pacific region with a long-term, future-oriented perspective to contribute to resolving the issues.

- At least half of the fellowship tenure period must be in Japan for non-Japan-based fellows or in one of the other three countries (India, Australia, or the U.S) for Japan based fellows.
Eligible Expenses
- Round-trip discount economy class international airfare between the Fellow’s base country and the two (or more) countries where the research activities take place (hereafter “country of activities”) will be provided.
- If the fellowship is divided into two parts, two airfares (each a round-trip/multi-country airline ticket) will be provided. In principle, the Japan Foundation will support two airfares at most.
- Itineraries may consist of one multi-country trip; two single-country trips; two multi country trips; or a combination of one single-country trip and one multi-country trip.
- Accommodation and research allowance will be determined based on a per diem basis.
- Additional allowance will be provided for dependent family members that accompany the fellow overseas for a minimum of 3 continuous months, at a rate of 10% of the regional per diem for one dependent, or 20% for two or more dependents.
- Insurance:
- For travel to Japan by non-Japan-based Fellows, the Japan Foundation will provide overseas travel insurance for the duration of their stay in Japan.
- For travel to India, Australia and the U.S., Fellows are required to arrange travel insurance on their own, and reimbursement will be determined according to the regulations of the Japan Foundation, depending on the destination and the duration of the stay.
- Insurance for travel to countries other than the above four countries is the responsibility of the Fellow.
- Insurance for any accompanying family members is also the responsibility of the Fellow.
- Payment Method and Schedule:
- The Fellowship allowances and expenses, in principle, will be transferred to a bank account. Fellows must have a bank account in their name that can receive remittances from Japan (Japan Foundation headquarters) for the fellowship or be able to open one before accepting the fellowship funds.
- In principle, one-time lump-sum payment will be remitted one month prior to the start date of the Fellowship, and the first payment of the allowance will be remitted at the end of the month prior to the start date of the fellowship. Any subsequent payments will be made at the end of each month on a monthly basis.

- Applicants must be citizens of Japan, Australia, India, or the U.S.A., or must have at least five years of strong and serious professional experience at an institution in one of these four countries.
- Applicants must hold a Ph.D., the highest academic degree in their field of expertise, or a Master’s Degree with five or more years of professional work experience in a field related to their proposed research.
- If the proposed project requires language proficiency, the applicant may be required to provide additional documentation to prove adequate language proficiency to complete the project.

- The Applicant should be responsible for carrying out proposed research project and managing the whole process including financials and reporting.
- Anyone cannot apply for duplicates of their grant programs including this grant program, while the Applicant can be a collaborator of other applicants.
- A grantee of FY2024Basic Science Research Project Grant or a grantee before that who is still under the grant due to the extension can apply for the continued project of the same research subject. Please describe the interim status of your research project and the reason of applying for the continued research project in the application form. However, this treatment is allowed only once. Additionally, applicants must meet the age requirement mentioned above.
