Deadline: 26-Oct-2025
The ASEAN-Korea Young Scholar Research Grant is an annual program designed to support graduate students from ASEAN Member States, Timor-Leste, and Korea to conduct on-site fieldwork and develop as future leaders in Southeast Asian and ASEAN studies.
The grant provides funding to carry out research in ASEAN countries or Korea, excluding the applicant’s country of origin, and offers the opportunity to present research at the ASEAN-Korea Young Scholar Workshop while networking with scholars and institutions across the region.
Each year, 12 graduate students are selected—one each from the 11 ASEAN countries, including Timor-Leste, and one from Korea. Successful applicants are expected to focus their research on ASEAN or specific ASEAN countries, ASEAN-Korea relations, or comparative and thematic topics aligned with ASEAN-Korea priorities.
The program prioritizes projects exploring ASEAN studies, ASEAN-Korea relations, ASEAN-ROK cooperation priorities, ASEAN Post-2025 Vision themes, and interdisciplinary studies relevant to Southeast Asia.
Selected students receive round-trip airfare up to USD 1,000 and a monthly stipend of USD 1,300 for up to three months to cover accommodation and research costs. Fieldwork must be completed no later than April 2026, and while longer fieldwork is welcome, funding is capped at three months.
Eligible applicants must be citizens of an ASEAN Member State, Timor-Leste, or Korea and currently enrolled in a Master’s or Doctoral program at an accredited university in their country of origin. Applicants must plan to conduct at least three months of fieldwork related to ASEAN or Southeast Asian studies. Research focused solely on the applicant’s own country of affiliation is not eligible for funding.
Applications are assessed based on a clear and relevant research question, strong understanding of academic literature, sound research design and methods, need for fieldwork, language skills (where applicable), and previous academic or field experience. Participants are expected to submit a mid-term report within six weeks of arriving at the fieldwork site, a final research report within four weeks of completing the fieldwork, and acknowledge the grant in future publications or theses. Participation in the ASEAN-Korea Young Scholar Workshop to present findings is also required.
During fieldwork, students are affiliated with a host university or research institute, paired with local scholars for academic guidance, and supported administratively and academically by the host institution.
The deadline for applications is 26 October 2025.
