The FCAS defines Applied Research as research that is directly practical and aimed at addressing specific, well-defined problems.
Unlike pure or theoretical research, which seeks to expand general knowledge without an immediate application, applied research is focused on real-world use and tangible outcomes. It involves the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of data to develop solutions, improve practices, or inform decision-making. This type of research may take place in the field, in laboratories, or through detailed analysis of existing data, producing new insights or confirmatory findings that have strong potential for publication in scientific literature.
To support the advancement of practical research, the FCAS accepts multi-year project submissions of up to three years in duration. Applicants must clearly outline the total cost of their project, its duration, and provide a year-by-year budget breakdown. Each project proposal must include a minimum contribution of 33 percent from the applicant, which may be provided either in cash or in-kind. Funding requests must not be less than $5,000 per year and should not exceed $50,000 per year. This structure ensures both sustainability and shared responsibility in the research effort.
All proposals will be carefully reviewed by the FCAS, which retains full discretion over their acceptance or rejection. Some proposals may be approved conditionally, depending on further clarification or modification. The FCAS also reserves the right to cancel or amend the call for proposals at any time. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their submissions, regardless of the final decision.
To be considered, proponents must complete the official proposal submission form, ensuring that all requested details are provided thoroughly and concisely. Proposals should be cost-effective, well-structured, and directly aligned with the objectives of the FCAS. The evaluation process will rely solely on the information contained in the submitted proposal form, making accuracy and clarity essential. Budget estimates should be realistic and well-justified, as they will be a key factor in the assessment process.
If a proposal is selected for funding, the submitted information will form the basis of a formal funding agreement between the FCAS and the recipient organization. Applicants must also adhere strictly to the specified word limits in each section of the proposal form. To ensure fairness and consistency in evaluation, only content within the stated word count will be reviewed. This ensures that all proponents are assessed equitably and that each proposal is evaluated based on the same standards of clarity, precision, and completeness.
