The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi has announced an open competition for organizations to submit applications to design and implement a program(s) to identify and train young artists in counties along the Kenyan coast to build their capacity and promote their talents.
Program Objectives
The project implementer will identify upcoming artists and performers, train them in arts entrepreneurship and give them the tools they need to be able to succeed in the industry.
Specifically, the project should:
- Identify and train at least 500 vulnerable youth – 15 to 35 years old.
- Prioritize gender balance among participants.
- Develop participants’ leadership and communication skills.
- Teach the participants’ technical and business skills, intellectual property rights, and marketing strategies, including the use of social media as a marketing tool.
- Promote community service and volunteerism.
- Build a mentorship program with established Kenyan artists.
- Liaise with the tourist industry for employment opportunities.
- Encourage participants to submit business proposals up to 1,000 USD – top 3 receive funding.
- Utilize resources from U.S. government alumni.
- Produce a final art performance.
Funding Information
- Length of performance period: 12 months
- Award amounts: minimum of $50,000 to a maximum of $150,000
- Total available funding: $150,000
- Anticipated program start date: April 15, 2019
Participants and Audiences
The target audiences should include acrobats, dancers, poets, authors, playwrights, musicians, and fine artists. The project grantee(s) should pay special attention to youth and female audiences.
Eligible Applicants
The following organizations are eligible to apply: U.S.-based non-profit/non-governmental organizations (NGOs) meeting the provisions described in Internal Revenue Code section 26 USC 501(c) (3); overseas (Kenyan) not-for-profit organizations and civil society/non-governmental organizations.
