The International Residencies program offers vital support to Canadian artists, arts workers, artistic groups, and organizations seeking to expand their creative practice through residencies abroad.
The Arts Across Canada and Abroad program, it aims to strengthen international artistic and cultural exchange by enabling participants to engage in creative research, production, and networking opportunities beyond Canada’s borders.
The program provides funding of up to $20,000, with applicants allowed to submit up to two applications per calendar year. Through this support, Canadian artists and cultural professionals can deepen their practice, collaborate with peers across the world, and bring global perspectives back to enrich Canada’s creative landscape.
Eligible applicants include individual artists or arts workers, artistic groups, and arts organizations, as well as First Nations, Inuit, and Métis artists, cultural carriers, and collectives. Not-for-profit Indigenous organizations are also encouraged to apply. The funding covers participation in international residencies lasting at least five consecutive days, provided that the applicant has been formally invited or selected by a host organization.
The grants are intended for activities focused on creative research, development, or production that foster meaningful international connections. However, the program does not support hosting residencies or any activities taking place within Canada. By offering this opportunity, the Canada Council for the Arts seeks to elevate Canadian creativity on the world stage and promote intercultural dialogue through artistic collaboration.
